MISSION STATEMENT – SACRISTAN
The Sacristan provides background help to the church and through the Stewardship of this ministry the celebrant priest and the parish community can elevate and enhance their prayer and worship at Holy Mass and other liturgical functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Prepare the liturgical space and articles for the celebration of the liturgy. The Sacristan’s responsibility includes preparing the vessels, sacristy, sanctuary and assembly for Mass (to include funerals, weddings, Holy Days etc.). The Sacristan oversees the “behind the scenes” preparation for liturgy - that is, prepares hosts, wine, candles, linens and other supplies as needed – this includes the importance and proper care of these items. The Sacristan co-ordinates the décor in church with a list of volunteers who take on this responsibility. Works with the Deacon to seek out and train Altar Servers, Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. To work with the Ushers at each Mass to insure each role for Mass has been filled along with any items or instructions needed for parishioners with special needs or extra items needed for special Masses throughout the Liturgical year.
The Eucharist mystery stands at the heart and center of the liturgy since it is the fount of life by which we are cleansed and strenghtened to live not for ourselves but for God and to be united in love among ourselves. -Pope Paul VI
